How Birthday Reminders Work on Stitch
How Stitch birthday reminders work, who can see your birthday by default, and how to dismiss a reminder without affecting anyone else.
What birthday reminders do
If you add your birthday to your Stitch profile, contacts who are allowed to see it get a reminder banner on the day, so nobody misses a friend's birthday just because it slipped their mind. It is a small feature, but it solves a real, common problem: remembering birthdays across dozens of contacts without relying on a separate calendar app.
Adding a birthday is entirely optional. If you never set one, nothing about this feature applies to your account.
Who can see your birthday by default
Birthday visibility is a dedicated privacy setting, separate from your other profile visibility controls, found in Settings → Privacy & Security → Birthday. If you have never changed this setting, your birthday is not shown to anyone until you deliberately choose to share it — it does not default to public just because you entered a date.
You can set birthday visibility to My Contacts (recommended for most people), Nobody, or Everyone, depending on how widely you want it known.
Changing who sees your birthday
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Birthday.
- Choose My Contacts to let only people you have added as contacts see it and get reminded.
- Choose Nobody to hide it from everyone while keeping the date saved on your own profile.
- Choose Everyone only if you are comfortable with anyone who can view your profile knowing the date.
Dismissing a reminder
When you see someone's birthday reminder banner, tapping the X on the card dismisses it for that day. This only affects that specific birthday, for that specific day — dismissing one contact's reminder has no effect on any other contact's reminders, and the same person's reminder will reappear next year without you having to do anything.
What birthday reminders do not do
Birthday reminders do not send the other person a notification that you viewed or dismissed their reminder, and they do not automatically message anyone on your behalf — you still have to actually reach out yourself. The feature only surfaces the reminder; what you do with it is up to you.
It also does not expose your birthday to anyone who is not already permitted to see it under your visibility setting. Changing your visibility to Nobody removes you from other people's reminder banners entirely, even if they had already seen it in a previous year.
Where the reminder actually shows up
A birthday reminder appears as a banner card in the app rather than a push notification competing with your messages, which is a deliberate choice — a birthday is a nice-to-know, not something urgent enough to interrupt you the way a new message might. If you have several contacts with birthdays close together, you may see more than one reminder card; each is dismissed independently, so clearing one does not clear the others.
What happens if a contact has not set their birthday
Not everyone chooses to add a birthday to their profile, and nothing about the reminder system assumes they have — if a contact has never entered a birth date, there is simply no reminder to show for them, the same as if their visibility were set to Nobody. There is no way to request or infer a birthday from someone who has not shared one; the feature only ever surfaces information a person has actively chosen to add and share.
Updating or removing your birthday later
If you entered the wrong date, or simply change your mind about having a birthday on your profile at all, you can update or remove it the same way you added it, in your profile settings. Removing it entirely stops any future reminders about you from appearing for anyone, regardless of what your visibility setting was — there is nothing left to show once the date itself is gone. Updating it takes effect immediately, so if you correct a mistaken date, contacts who were seeing the wrong reminder day will see the corrected one going forward.
A quick setup checklist
- Add your birthday in your profile if you want reminders to work both ways.
- Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Birthday and set visibility deliberately — the safe default is My Contacts.
- Remember that dismissing a reminder is per-contact, per-day, and never affects anyone else's reminders.
- Do not expect a reminder for contacts who have never added a birthday — there is nothing to surface until they do.
